THE ARTIST PROJECT: Ghada Amer on an Iranian Tile Panel, "Garden Gathering"

3:05

"This is, for me, a very Matissean-like painting before Matisse." Standing before the Iranian tile panel painting, Garden Gathering, Ghada Amer explains her own “identity quest.” The artist grew up in France and considers herself to be an American, but is primarily described and defined by others as Egyptian or Muslim. In this video, Amer considers the resonance of this piece within her own identity and artistic practice. This video was produced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
